Free Color Contrast Checker

We created a totally free way for you to check the contrast levels of your color combos.

How this tool works

This app tests the contrast levels of the colors in your palette. As long as the level is above a 4.5, then it is considered ‘Compliant’.

WCAG 2.0 level AA requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. WCAG 2.1 requires a contrast ratio of at least 3:1 for graphics and user interface components. WCAG Level AAA requires a contrast ratio of at least 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text.

Large text is defined as 14 point (typically 18.66px) and bold or larger, or 18 point (typically 24px) or larger.

How to use the Color Contrast Checker

Simply add any two hex codes, then click 'View Contrast Levels'. You will instantly see the contrast score between the two colors.

If it's above a 4.5, then you're good!

If the level is less than 4.5, then you might want to adjust your color combos to keep things more accessible. :)

NOTE: This tool works best on Google Chrome. It's functional on other browsers, but it works best on Chrome.

    Best Guide to Finding Your Brand Colors

    I originally was using the free color buddy tool, which was so nice because it gave instant access to my brand colors--not only with the HEX codes, but with the RGB and CMYK codes too. However, I was still struggling with my brand colors, knowing only a general idea of what I wanted. The Color Palette Builder helped me find the exact colors, giving the best contrast for website readability. It made it much easier seeing the contrast in a number scale, rather than trusting my eye. You can only take so much of staring at the same colors, before feeling like you are at an eye exam. Sam was also very helpful and answered all of my questions with a detailed video response, showing the best way to use the builder with my color ideas. I finally found the best color choices for my brand. I'm very happy with my palette, and I wouldn't have been as successful without Sam and the help of the Color Palette Builder!

    Do your research

    It’s an amazing idea and that’s why I purchased. However the UI is a little clunky. There are also a very limited number of palettes to choose from. Since you have to bring your own source the interface is horrible to get the eye dropper unless you have a massive monitor to use. However I like the other features.
